Appalachian Suite was inspired by Richard Strauss "Alpine Symphony". There is a great deal of imagery in this piece. The piano plays the part of the environment, mostly weather or mood, and the horn is the "hero" in this story providing commentary on the moods created by the piano. The piece also contains numerous dream sequences in which the horn and piano start off in the reality of the moment and then are swept off into new thematic ideas.
